Our Story

Hi! My name is Sarah, I am the owner and pastry chef of Sarah’s Sweet Tarts and Treats, LLC. I started baking around the age of ten and my love of baking grew stronger each year. After high-school, I decided to go to culinary school at Johnson County Community College. After a short time, I knew pastry/baking was definitely what I wanted my career to be; but not only that, I also knew I wanted to have a bakery of my own.

During my final semester at Johnson County Community College, I was diagnosed with a wheat allergy, so strong that I could no longer touch or breathe around wheat flour. I was devastated. I could not think of anything else I would rather do. Six months after being diagnosed, I realized I had to find a way to bake again. So, I started experimenting with gluten-free flours. After several years of test-baking, I had enough recipes to start my baking business!

In May 2017, I decided to start small by selling at Cottin’s Hardware Farmers Market once a week on Thursdays. Then, after the first year in business, I started accepting special orders year-round as well as participating in festivals and events. Sometime, in the future, I hope to have a store-front. But for now, I am enjoying getting to know my customers, meeting new ones, trying new recipes, and baking lots of treats! The part I like best though, is providing good products for those who, like me, can’t tolerate wheat or gluten. I know how difficult it is to find gluten-free baked goods, especially ones that have similar tastes and textures that non-gluten-free baked goods have. That is why I do a lot of test-baking before I introduce new products. It takes awhile before they are Sarah-approved! I also am happy to now offer treats that avoid other allergens as well!
